π€ Wall Street wants receipts...And "trust us, it'll pay off" isn't cutting it anymore. Alphabet (GOOGL) and Tesla (TSLA) kicked off tech earnings season with the same problem. Beat on revenue. Miss the vibe. Alphabet's second-quarter revenue came in at $119.8 billion, up 24%. Google Cloud jumped 82%, its strongest quarter on record. Cloud chief Thomas Kurian said customers are spending 50% more than committed, so Google is renting outside capacity to keep up. But the cash left over after all that spending? That went from nearly $25 billion last year to negative $5.9 billion. Alphabet also raised its full-year infrastructure spending plan to $195-205 billion, up from $180-190 billion just three months ago. GOOGL fell more than 7% on Thursday. Tesla was the same story. Revenue topped estimates, but the cash left over after spending went from positive $1.44 billion in the first quarter to negative $1.1 billion. Capital spending rose 142% to $5.79 billion in the second quarter. Musk's take on the call: overspending now is fine "if we get things done sooner." Wall Street heard it. Then sold. TSLA slid 4%. The rest of the Mag 7 reports next week. Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple. Same spending questions, same skeptical jury. TSLA usually goes up in early August, though after a 4% post-earnings drop, traders need a clean floor first. β πͺ Archer found a detour...Right through the U.S. defense budget. Archer Aviation (ACHR), the company behind electric air taxis for city travel, just showed up at Farnborough Air Show in the UK with something the Pentagon might actually want. Teaming up with Anduril, a defense tech company, Archer came out with Thunder, a self-piloting aircraft built for military missions alongside crewed planes and helicopters. War games, not traffic jams. ACHR jumped 18% on the news. Here's the catch, though... Archer's commercial air taxi dream is still stuck in certification limbo. Regulatory hurdles, lawsuits, timeline delays. CEO Adam Goldstein says they're still aiming for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as the commercial launch target. Defense doesn't have the same problem. Military applications skip the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) sign-off that's been holding back the commercial side. Different customer. Different rules. Goldstein called defense a "huge market" as U.S. military spending on AI-equipped aircraft climbs. And Toupee Fiasco (Trump) gave the whole eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) industry a boost with a pilot program across 26 states. β π Two more trials, same result...Lilly's next weight loss shot clears the science, just not the paperwork. Eli Lilly (LLY) said it will file for approval of retatrutide, its next-generation weight loss injection, in early 2027. That's a delay from its original plan to file as early as this year. The reason is paperwork, not science. Lilly needs more time to gather the manufacturing and quality-control data the FDA (the federal agency that approves new drugs) requires before it can officially apply. The trial results speak for themselves. In one trial, adults with obesity and diabetes taking retatrutide lost an average of up to 20.8% of their body weight (about 50 pounds) over 80 weeks. In another, adults with severe obesity and heart disease lost an average of up to 22.6% (about 56 pounds) over the same period. Retatrutide is Lilly's "triple G" drug, meaning it targets three different hormones that control appetite instead of the one or two that existing shots target. That's why the weight loss numbers are so large. Lilly now has five successful late-stage trials behind retatrutide, and analysts expect the drug to generate $3.8 billion in sales by 2030. The weight loss drug market could hit $100 billion by the 2030s. Lilly and Novo Nordisk (NVO) are the two names racing for every piece of it. β π« TMYK As an options contract gets closer to expiration, it loses value. This is called ______.
